Our Water Crisis

Flood affected channels need urgent attention

January 31, 2011

NVIRP needs to immediately divert all of its equipment and modernisation construction activity to repair the flood damage of the channel systems.

“I have spoken to Goulburn Murray Water who assure me they are doing the best they can, but it is important that we put all of the resources into this restoration and repairing work right now, so we don’t have further stock losses because of the lack of water being made available for them,” Sharman Stone, Federal Member for Murray said.

“There are a lot of livestock that cannot drink the contaminated water currently in the system. Farmers need fresh flushes of stock and domestic water through the channels right now, in order to keep the livestock alive.

“As well a lot of people are looking to irrigate that weren’t flooded and need these channels fixed immediately.

“There are a lot of the channels which have blown out or had to be deliberately cut to ease the flood situation to save towns as well,” Sharman Stone said.
