Public hearing in Shepparton Murray Darling Basin Guide
January 11, 2011
Locals are being encouraged to take part in the Federal Parliament Standing Committee public hearing on the socio-economic impacts of the Murray Darling Basin Authority Guide in Shepparton on Friday night the 21st January.
Dr Sharman Stone, Federal Member for Murray, who is also a member of the Committee, said it was important that we have strong local voices speaking out.
“This Labor Government Murray Darling Basin Authority Plan proposes to remove up to 35% of what remains of irrigation water in the region. This water would be added to environmental flows,” Sharman Stone said.
“Such a loss in productivity would affect everyone in the community, from farmers to other small business owners, public servants, retired people, food industry supply chain, everyone.
“The Standing Committee has been asked to review the social science and assumptions of the plan and to identify the impact on communities socially and economically.
“As well as visiting the areas, the committee needs to see and hear first hand how the loss of water through the drought impacted communities and the economy.
“The drought showed us what happens when you have little water. We know what will happen if you loose another big lot of water permanently. It is all about job losses, less food production and population loss.
“Those who have made written submissions to the inquiry have been invited to talk to the committee from 5pm on Friday 21st of January at the Goulburn Valley Hotel, High Street, Shepparton. From 7.50pm onwards others who have not already made a written submission may make a statement.
“The public is welcome to attend all of the hearing.
“On Saturday the committee will see the black water events in the Barmah Forest,” Sharman Stone said.
