Expansion of Dhurringile prison will deliver new jobs to local economy

January 30, 2012

The expansion of the Dhurringile prison will add another 80 jobs to the local economy.

Dr Sharman Stone, Federal Member for Murray, welcomed this good news saying that the expansion will greatly support the Murray region, especially benefiting businesses in Tatura, Murchison and Shepparton. It will also offer great rehabilitation and preparation for life after prison for more offenders.

The 54-bed expansion is the first step towards adding another 500 beds to the Dhurringile prison over the next four years.

The $17 million Dhurringile project is expected to create 70 jobs during the construction phase and an additional 12 permanent positions once the project is completed.

“With job losses in the food manufacturing and retail sector in the Murray region, we need to see more decentralisation of key government services.

“Those men and women with particular skills and interest in working with Victorian Corrections should contact the Governor at Dhurringile for more information about employment opportunities,” said Sharman Stone.

Expanding the prison will definitely increase the opportunity of new jobs as it will require more people for maintainence. This is a good thing.
