Sale of imported avocados misleads consumers

Imported avocadoes are being sold under a sign detailing “avocado growing regions of Australia” and beside an Australian map.

Dr Sharman Stone, Federal Member for Murray, has strongly criticised Woolworths for what could be a very misleading labelling. Although the sign above the box also indicates that it is a product from New Zealand, the map of Australia on the sign is the key message.

Sharman Stone will be reporting the breach to Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).

“This is also particularly sad given there are plenty of Aussie avocados available but they are not being offered for sale to people who will always worry about imported foods. Given the prices Woolworths has paid for the imported avocados, it is clear that this overseas product comes at a huge profit for them.”

“Supermarkets must be more honest with their food labelling without any tricks and clearly inform consumers where their product comes from”, said Sharman Stone.

Sharman Stone advises everyone to check all food labels, especially for fresh fruits and vegetables as well as manufactured and frozen food, before making a purchase.
