Calling on everyone for the Murray Darling Basin Draft Plan Meeting 13 December
December 8, 2011
Whatever else you planned to do on the 13th December change your plans.
Sharman Stone, Federal Member for Murray says “it is vital that everyone comes to the Murray Darling Basin Authority’s public meeting to find out what they want to do with our water.
“The meeting will be held in Shepparton on the 13 December. The community can hear first hand what is proposed and voice our concerns on the impacts this Plan will have on our local economy.
Sharman Stone said, “Describing the document as a Plan is wrong. This is a document that says how the Commonwealth will take more water for the environment without any detail on how the water will be used and what is actually needed for environmental sites across the Basin.
“This Draft Plan is actually worse for our region than the previous Guide. It increases the water take from our area by 23% compared to the Plan released in October last year.
“The Murray Darling Basin does not need more environmental water. We have already met end of valley targets and contributed over 5000 gigalitres since 1988. The Government must also stop forever any further buybacks.
“The cost of this Plan will not just be the water taken out of productive agriculture, it will be the flow on to job losses in agriculture, food factories, transport, retail, services and small towns,” Sharman Stone said.
“The Goulburn Murray region depends on agriculture for its survival and the agricultural sector depends on water for its output. Our region is easy picking because we have the highest security water guaranteed to deliver water to the environment.
“I urge the people of Murray to come along to the meeting and voice their concerns about the impact of this Plan on
Tuesday, 13 December at 10.30am at the Eastbank Centre, Welsford St, Shepparton.
