Reminder for local groups to apply for grants to help to curb Binge Drinking
Local councils and community groups are reminded that they have until October 28 to apply for a grant through the National Binge Drinking Strategy aimed at trying to address Australia’s growing epidemic of young people drinking until they drop.
Dr Sharman Stone, Federal Member for Murray said today, “Binge Drinking has become an epidemic amongst our young Australians and this grant offers the opportunity for local clubs and the like to embark on some specific strategies to help curb this most dangerous and unhealthy drinking.”
The National Binge Drinking Strategy grants are up to $500,000 for partnerships or collaborations between local community groups, or up to $300,000 for individual projects. The grants are targeted at strategies for young people aged between 12 and 24 years of age.
The closing date for the grant tender submissions is 28th of October 2011. Details about where to apply can be found on the anpha.gov.au website, or contact Sharman Stone’s office on
1300 132 413 or 58215371 for more information.
“I encourage anyone who is involved with young people to have a good look at this grant and take the opportunity to apply for funding.
“With football and netball finals behind us and summer sports not yet started, now is the ideal time for committees to look at new ways of encouraging responsible use of alcohol,” Sharman Stone said.
“Excessive drinking on a regular basis needs to be tackled with a community wide approach. Grant moneys could, for example, be part of a strategy that helps educate binge drinkers to resist peer pressure, to take greater responsibility for their own behaviour, to become aware of the dangers of spiked drinks, and the long and short term risks of binging, especially for girls where drinks could lead to a brain damaged baby.
