Young Sporting Champions from Shepparton Receive Grant Assistance
Young sporting talents from Shepparton today were presented with awards for participating in state or national sporting championships. Each recipient was awarded an Australian Sports Commission grant of $500 under the Local Sports Champions Grant, funding designed to assist younger athletes to meet the costs associated with competing at the highest levels.
Federal Member for Murray, Dr Sharman Stone individually presented the awards to the following talents:
1. Sean Heath Reidy, Basketball. Represented Country Victoria at the Under 16 National Titles in Logan, Queensland.
2. Thomas Matthew Jordan, Basketball. Represented Country Victoria at the Under 16 National Titles in Logan, Queensland.
3. Jaegan Kenneth Charles Castles, Cycling. Represented Cycle Sports Victoria at the State Championships in Wangaratta, Victoria
4. Tyson May, Bicycle Motorcross. Represented Shepparton BMX Club at the Australian National Championship in Cairns, Queensland.
5. John Woodcock, Basketball. Represented Country Victoria at the Under 18 Nationals in Ulverstone, Tasmania.
Alexandra Radevski was also awarded the Grant for golf yet was unable to attend today’s presentation due to a prior commitment.
“I congratulate these fine young sportsmen and women for what they have achieved and I look forward to following their progress and seeing their dreams realised,” Sharman Stone said.
“Our region is well known for producing sporting champions; we only have to look at Shepparton professional golfer Jarrod Lyle who plays on the USPGA tour and former Melbourne AFL star Gary Lyon from Kyabram.
“Yet, to reach these lofty heights, requires considerable financial support. Often the travel, accommodation, specialised equipment and uniforms needed to participate can be very expensive and a major reason as to why many potential young champions are forced to withdraw from representative events.” Sharman Stone said.
“Living in a regional area, or far from the event’s location, shouldn’t prevent our young guns from participating at representative levels. I want to encourage our youth to be the best they can be and make full use of the help available.
Sharman Stone said there will be two more funding rounds this year under the Local Sporting Champions Grants:
“There are three funding rounds annually and applications are accepted all year round.”
“For more information and application forms contact my office on 1300 132 413 or check the website http://www.ausport.gov.au/” Sharman Stone said.
