ABC TV no longer biased: Bowls ripped from our screens After thirty years of building a dedicated audience, the ABC will stop broadcasting lawn bowls programs at the end of this summer’s season. Despite being one of Australia’s highest participation sports, especially among seniors and those in regional areas, the national broadcaster has pulled the pin
The Federal Coalition recognises how much the broadcasting of bowls means to so many Australians and has initiated a petition to be presented to the House of Representatives, demanding its reinstatement.
Federal Member for Murray, Dr Sharman Stone today welcomed the petition and urged everyone to add their name to the list given the major part bowls plays in the lives of so many Victorians.
“Both nationally and within the electorate of Murray, we have a strong bowls tradition. Geoff Tinning and Mark Humphries, both of Tongala, caused a storm when they made the final of the 2009 Australian Open men’s pairs event.
“Nationwide, bowls attracts around 800,000 participants annually and encourages everyone – both young and old - to remain healthy and continue an active lifestyle. Bowls is a way of life for many and it must stay on the ABC; for this to happen, we need as many signatures as possible.
“We should be encouraging all Australians, no matter their age, to remain socially involved and stay healthy; to rip this sport from free-to-air television will decimate its profile. Of course, this will see a reduction in participation numbers.” Sharman Stone said.
The ABC charter expressly states that its line-up should provide a balance between wide appeal and specialised broadcasting programs, especially those seen to add to our national identity.
“Participation in bowls is central to the identity of many Australians and it must continue.” Sharman Stone said.
“I look forward to this petition, with thousands of names, being presented to parliament and seeing bowls back on the ABC where it rightfully belongs.
The petition can be signed at my electorate office, or downloaded via http://www.bowlsaustralia.com.au/ or feel free to call 03 5821 5371 to have one sent to your club.
