Vietnam Veterans Day: Lest We Forget
August 16, 2011
Federal Member for Murray Sharman Stone would like to remind everyone that Vietnam Veterans Day is Thursday 18th August and encourages everyone to pay their respects to those who, so heroically, risked and lost their lives fighting for our freedom.
“Thursday marks the 46th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan - one of the biggest Vietnam War engagements Australia was involved in.” Sharman Stone said.
"Our young men, hugely outnumbered, took on and defeated the much larger North Vietnamese Army and Viet Cong guerrillas in a rubber plantation at Long Tan, South Vietnam.
“Whilst the allies lost 17 Infantry troops and one Armed Corp soldier, enemy losses totalled around 2500.
“This incredible statistic alone is a direct reminder of the ANZAC spirit founded nearly a century ago at Gallipoli.” Sharman Stone said.
“Vietnam Veterans Day was established so that everyone, ex-service person or not, could pause and remember, not just those who paid the supreme price at Long Tan, but also reflect on the 2500 members of all branches of the Service who were wounded; many still suffering greatly today.” Sharman Stone said.
“I am immensely proud to be the patron of the Goulburn Valley Vietnam Veterans Association and would like to see as many Electorate of Murray locals as possible attend to pay respect to these brave Australian and New Zealand men and women who put their lives on the line so we can enjoy the freedom and liberty our two great nations are famous for.” Sharman Stone said.
