Nominations now open for Rural Women’s Award.

August 8, 2011

Australia’s most inspirational rural women are again to be recognised. Submissions open for the 2012 Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation (RIRDC) Rural Women’s Award.

This peak national award will provide financial assistance and mentoring to the winners as well as nation-wide access to some renowned business and community leaders.
Federal Member for Murray Dr Sharman Stone encourages local women involved in primary industry to enter themselves or nominate someone they think is ready for a new challenge.
“This could be a life changing opportunity for some women in Murray. It also allows winners to take the next step in their leadership development,” Dr Stone said.
“We have so many talented women in agriculture within Murray who have a positive, long term outlook. I strongly urge all those interested to apply for the $10 000 bursary.” Dr Stone said.
We have already had some success:  Murray local, Jennifer Savage, the most recent RIRDC Rural Women’s Award Runner Up.
Jennifer’s wants to see the development of a training program for aquaculture specialising in Australian native fish species and delivered in regional Victoria.  Jennifer believes that fish farming offers a lucrative income stream for farmers and a real solution to the shortage of wild catch. She plans to undertake further education in training and is committed to supporting the re-establishment of the Victorian Aquaculture Council.

Sharman Stone encourages applications from women involved in all aspects of primary industries.
“Be it broad-acre farming, intensive livestock, cropping, horticulture, fisheries, forestry, new and emerging plant and animal enterprises, indigenous rural enterprises, natural resource management and related services industries, every woman involved in the agricultural sector should feel entitled to apply for the award and chase the opportunities it presents.” Sharman Stone said.
Applications close on World Rural Women’s Day – 15th October 2011 and can be downloaded and submitted online via www.rirdc.gov.au
