Macklin Continues to Ignore Report on Type 1 Diabetes and leaves families hanging in the balance
July 29, 2011
Federal Member for Murray Dr Sharman Stone today called on Minister Jenny Macklin to release the report of the review of the Carer Allowance for carers of children with Type 1 diabetes.
"Despite the significant increase in Type 1 diabetes in regional Victoria, Federal Government changes in eligibility will leave many local families facing an around-the-clock burden of care to look after their children, without much help. Diabetes requires careful diet monitoring and medication management around the clock." Dr Stone said.
"Minister Macklin has been sitting on this report for over a month and done nothing. The Minister has left hundreds of local families in limbo.
"Carers of children with Type 1 Diabetes deserve better from the Gillard government.
"Following changes introduced by the Gillard government to the Carer Allowance assessment process, some carers of children with Type 1 Diabetes lost eligibility for the carer allowance once their child reached 10 years of age. In fact the work of parents and other carers remains the same, no matter the age of the child they look after.
"Jenny Macklin’s failure to release the report or even respond to it has left many Murray families affected by Type 1 diabetes in limbo."
"Minister Macklin needs to end the uncertainty for carers of children with Type 1 diabetes and acknowledge that children and their parents are really suffering because of her lack of interest." Dr Stone said.
