National Servicemen’s Day
February 17, 2011
On Monday, Dr Sharman Stone, Federal Member for Murray, and patron for the Shepparton and District National Servicemen’s Association remembered the more than 280,000 Australians who have served nationally in our defence forces.
“Monday the 14th of February is National Service Day, and pays tribute to those who served in the Korean War and wars in Borneo and Vietnam between 1951 and 1972.
“It is fitting that we thank the men who were prepared to pay the ultimate sacrifice for our country, leaving behind their families to serve to protect our great nation.
“Our local Nasho’s, some who are nearing their 80’s still continue to contribute to our communities and are actively restoring war memorials, preserving our Australian history and looking after service men and women and their families.”
Sharman said she has been honoured to present many National Servicemen with their medals in her time as Member for Murray.
“If you have not yet applied for your medal, phone (03) 58215371 or stop in to my office at 426 Wyndham Street in Shepparton,” Sharman Stone said.
