Mr Almaribe released from Saudi Arabian jail
January 12, 2012
After many weeks in a Saudi Arabian prison after being convicted of blasphemy, Australian citizen Mr Mansor Almaribe is now on a plane home. He will be arriving on an Arab Emirates flight a little after 2.00 am tomorrow.
On the 14th November Mr Almaribe was arrested and later sentenced to two years jail and 500 lashes for “insulting the prophet Mohamed’s companion”, while on a pilgrimage to Mecca.
Mansor’s family, including his three older children and three year old son back home in Shepparton feared for his survival given Mr Almaribe’s poor health, including diabetes, back injury and heart conditions.
Sharman Stone, Member for Murray said the community support and interfaith representation had been unremitting.
“The Delegation I took to see the Ambassador for Saudi Arabia in Canberra found His Excellency understanding and doing all he could to help.
“At that meeting just before Christmas we presented petitions with hundreds of signatures of local and interstate people pleading for mercy and understanding, and the immediate release of Mr Almaribe,” Sharman Stone said.
Mr Almaribe has been given 75 of the lashes he was sentenced to. He will be reunited with his family in an emotional reunion this Friday morning at Melbourne Airport.
