Remembrance Day for our veterans and serving military personal

November 7, 2011

The 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month, is a time that is embedded into every Australians minds and hearts. This year is the 93rd anniversary of Remembrance Day.

The Federal Member for Murray, Dr Sharman Stone said “Remembrance Day is a time when all Australians take a moment to reflect on the sacrifices servicemen and women have made, and are still giving, to protect the freedom of this wonderful country of ours.”

“On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918 the First World War officially ended. In most towns in Australia now, a siren will sound and people pay their respects with heads bowed for one minute. ” said Dr Stone.

Dr Sharman Stone also strongly encourages the people of Murray to buy and wear a commemorative red poppy, the symbol of Remembrance Day. This is also a great way to support Legacy, the Returned and Services League of Australia (RSL).

“On this day we remember all of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice to serve and protect the country they lived in and loved. This year we must not just remember the men and women who had perished, fought and served in war, but also the many families and friends, who were sometimes left to live alone.”

Dr Stone said “The symbol of the unknown Australian Soldier, now buried at the Canberra War Memorial, reflects the importance of Remembrance Day. This soldier is only one of 35 527 soldiers who have no identified graves from World War I and World War II. The Unknown Australian Soldier is a sign of the respect Australians have for one another, and how every life is precious, whether they are known or not.”

“More information about Remembrance Day and Remembrance Day ceremonies can be found on the Australian War Memorial website www.awm.gov.au or by calling my office on (03) 5821 5371 or free call 1300 132 413.” Sharman Stone said.
