Carbon Tax Will Send Council Rates Skyrocketing
All Australians were promised a carbon tax would not be imposed on them by a Gillard Government. Now we are being told that the Greens are insisting this happens, but they say the blow will be softened with compensation to cover the rising costs. This compensation is not going to be extended to most things however, including roads and rubbish tips! Local Council land fill services will cost local residents considerably more when this carbon tax hits the Australian public.
Federal Member for Murray Sharman Stone said today that "under the carbon tax, local governments will have to pay extra to turn on the street lights, they will have to pay an extra 5% to build a road and they will have to pay a lot more to take the rubbish to the tip.”
· Dubbo City Council estimates its power bill alone will increase by $500,000
· Tamworth Regional Council estimates an impact on their electricity bill of $300,000.
“Even though only some 70 land fill sites in Australia emit over 25,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide, the Gillard Government intends to tax another 120. The man at the gate to the tip is apparently supposed to do the tax calculation on each load you bring in.
“These extra local government costs are being imposed without any form of compensation by the Gillard Government. Landfill sites across the country will face an estimated $200 million carbon tax bill and it is the public who will be picking up the tab.” Sharman Stone said.
"Ultimately, just like all the other business, local governments will pass these costs on to rate payers.
“Since the Environmental Protection Agency has already added another $81,000 to the City of Greater Shepparton’s land fill charges, clearly locals will be paying a double extra hit.
“There are 565 local governments in Australia and all will have higher costs imposed on them as a result of the carbon tax. It will not only be the 400biggest polluters who will pay the tax, every rate payer will be affected, with no extra services, just extra costs.
“Deloitte Access Economics has highlighted the effect of the carbon tax on Victoria. Deloitte’s show the carbon tax will reduce Victorian job growth by 24,311 jobs in 2015 and reduce Victorian output by $2.8 billion in 2015.
“Prime Minister Gillard needs to consider the real effects of the Carbon Tax on people who are battling as it is, without enforcing further costs with no benefit to the planet.” Sharman Stone said.
