Live exports suspension of trade
May 31, 2011
In response to the shocking footage seen on the ABC’s Four Corners program last night, Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Joe Ludwig has today announced a halt to the trade of live animals to the facilities identified on the program.
Federal Member for Murray, Dr Sharman Stone strongly supports this announcement.
“No one can tolerate cruelty to animals of any kind, and so I and the Coalition support the call to suspend the supply of Australian cattle to Indonesian facilities where cruelty is occurring,” Sharman Stone said.
“Mr. Ludwig has also banned any further introduction of the restraint boxes seen on the TV. They clearly add to the animal’s distress.
“An independent reviewer is also going to investigate the whole system of live exports and slaughter,” Sharman Stone said.
“It is clear animals were well treated up to the point where they were sold in Indonesia for slaughter. Then the cruelty began, in most places it seems.
“The Coalition will do all it can to ensure the shocking treatment of animals slaughtered in Indonesia stops, and stops immediately,” Sharman Stone said.
