Sharman Stone commends Euroa VCs
May 30, 2011
On Tuesday in Parliament, Federal Member for Murray, Dr Sharman Stone put on to the national record details of the three courageous VC recipients from the area; Lieutenant Colonel Leslie Cecil Maygar, Major Frederick Harold Tubb and Corporal Alexander Stuart Burton.
Leslie Maygar fought in the Boer War when he was one of only 6 to receive the VC for outstanding courage. He then enlisted in the First World War and was killed after receiving many more commendations and medals for bravery.
Major Frederick Tubb and Corporal Alexander Burton were both decorated because of their action at Lone Pine, Gallipoli. Alexander Burton was killed at Lone Pine. Major Tubb died later in France killed by friendly fire.
Sharman Stone spoke about the tireless effort of the people of Euroa and district to have three bronze statues erected on the banks of the Seven Creeks near the current RSL to commemorate these three very special men.
“I want to commend this small town for ensuring its three VC heroes are never forgotten. I want to commend the community fundraising campaign which will be launched on the 11th of June. Over $300,000 will be needed to erect the statue and memorial avenue.
“The statues of the three VC recipients will stand forever on the banks of the Seven Creeks and should become the focal point for memorial services.
“The memorial avenue will be rehabilitated to make sure that they and other local returned servicemen and servicewomen, are never forgotten.
“We do not celebrate war in Australia, but we never forget,” Sharman Stone said.
