Gas appliance safety improvement to begin
May 19, 2011
The Federal Government has now acted on the private member’s motion put into parliament by Sharman Stone. This motion received bipartisan support.
The Federal Government and the Ministerial Council on Energy are now working together to stop the deadly consequences of carbon monoxide poisoning caused by faulty appliances.
Federal Member for Murray, Dr Sharman Stone said “the deaths of Chase and Tyler Robinson will not be entirely in vain if the numbers of deaths from carbon monoxide poisoning can be stopped or at least drastically reduced.
“Unfortunately it took the deaths of two innocent boys in Mooroopna to bring this silent killer to light.
“The Government will be using the best available science and consulting gas industry experts to develop a strategy that will need to be taken up by all states and territories.
The draft gas appliances safety strategy is to include:-
· Determining which carbon monoxide detectors are reliable, effective and affordable;
· Identifying best practice overseas regarding the compulsory use of detectors;
· Review of costs and benefits of all residential properties and recreational vehicles with gas appliances being fitted with detectors;
· Identification of the costs and benefits to all residential rental properties being fitted with a gas detector where gas appliances are installed, and routine inspections by a qualified contractor;
· The education of the public, tradespeople, police and health workers about the problem.
“There has been a huge increase in the number of people now checking old or new gas appliances. This is great to see. Vanessa and Scott Robinson’s community ads are already making a difference.
“Now the new laws and regulations are on the way,” Sharman Stone said.
