Beware of phone callers offering money

July 22, 2010

Several residents in the Electorate of Murray have reported bogus calls in yet another scam to obtain money by deception.

Federal Member for Murray, Sharman Stone said she had received calls from constituents saying they have been contacted by a person claiming to be from a Government Department advising that they were entitled to reclaim overpaid bank fees and taxes.

The scammer said that they had a form completed by a member of the family and they needed to confirm details, which of course included bank account information. The scammer would not provide a call back phone number for the resident to check their credentials.

“However in some cases, to seem more credible, scammers are actually providing a call back number and registration number which are all part of the scam.

Sharman Stone urged people who are approached at anytime by anyone claiming they were entitled to a refund of money to undertake checks to verify the credentials of the caller. If it is an email, do not respond.

“If you are unsure you can always check on the Government’s watchdog website at www.scamwatch.gov.au call my office toll free 1300 132 413 or Consumer Affairs on 1300 558 181,” Sharman Stone said.
