Water money is not secured

March 31, 2010

Newspapers have to be held accountable. In the Weekly Times 31 March 2010 page 7 the Journalist Peter Hunt writes that the Commonwealth and State Governments have committed to $65 million to buyout 108 Campaspe District water entitlement holders.

He states “irrigators gain $2400 a megalitre from the Commonwealth”. Sadly that is simply not true, but we certainly wish it was so.

Negotiations with the Commonwealth are not finished however; in fact the irrigators have yet to put their formal request to Minister Wong.

A drought stressed community is waiting with fingers crossed to see what their future holds.

It is unfair and unhelpful to print poorly researched, false and misleading information.
